When the Civil War erupted in 1861,Vermont was quick to answer the call. Determined that our young nation must not be divided, tens of thousands of men and boys marched into battle. At Gettysburg, the Wilderness and Cedar Creek Vermont regiments were called upon because of their courage and determination, even when faced with overwhelming odds. Because the Vermonters fiercely held their ground, Generals Meade, Hancock, Sheridan and Sedgwick placed them in the lead and they took part in decisive Union victories.
While history paints a heroic picture of the battlefield, long marches, short rations, patched boots and longing for home filled a soldier's life. At home, mothers and wives organized Soldier's Aid Societies and sewed quilts, socks and under-drawers for the men. They worked and worried, often going weeks or months without a word from their loved ones. Vermont's growing industry also supported the war effort: mills hummed with the manufacture of woolen blankets and uniforms, and large farms shipped apples, potatoes and hay to feed men and horses.
This program paints a vivid picture of Vermont's noble hearts, at home and in the field, during America's Civil War.
