In the early 1900s, America was beginning to modernize. Innovations like airplanes, radio, telephones, automobiles and other conveniences meant a tremendous difference in people’s day-to-day lives. While cities were swept into the future, in most rural areas life was much the same as it had been a century earlier.
These were farming communities, and people shared a common experience: the seasonal rhythms of planting and harvest, lessons in a one-room schoolhouse, daily chores and the challenges of country life. What did these technological breakthroughs mean for people living in these isolated communities?
For farmers, power made milk production easier. Automobiles took people further afield and brought new ideas to town. Radio and telephones connected far-flung villages with the rest of the world. Watch as farmers, country doctors, schoolteachers and townsfolk from Shoreham, Danby, Eden, Lowell, Ludlow, Woodstock, Albany and other towns share their memories of days gone by.
