Electra Havemeyer Webb
ELECTRA HAVEMEYER WEBB (DVD)
Out of the Ordinary
1 Hour Closed Captioned
Item# VT458
$19.95

Electra Havemeyer Webb was born in 1888, during America's "Gilded Age." Her father, wealthy industrialist H.O. Havemeyer, made his fortune in the sugar business, and they lived among New York's elite. Avid art collectors, Electra's parents amassed a superb collection — one which later became the foundation of the Metropolitan Museum of Art's European Impressionist collection.

Electra, too, developed a love of art. But her unique vision enabled her to see the merit in even workaday objects. In a lifetime of passionate collecting she acquired items such as hunting decoys, weather vanes and crockery, which exemplified the ingenuity and craftsmanship of the pre-industrial era. Wishing to share her collections with the public Electra established the Shelburne Museum, near the Webb family's Vermont estate. She devoted herself to the museum, adding structures with historic and artistic significance, including a covered bridge and even a lighthouse. Many housed her vast collection but some, like the steamship Ticonderoga, were important works themselves. Today the museum's Americana collection is one of the world's finest.

Join host Fritz Wetherbee as he tours the Shelburne Museum and the Webb home. Family photos and reminiscences tell Electra's story while museum experts explain her vision and show important works from the collection.
